The Army Public School (APS) attack shook not only Pakistan but also the entire world. The tragedy of December 16, 2014 is recalled every year because it left deep traumatic effects on the loved ones of the victims. The whole nation grieved over this brutal massacre of over 147 children and 8 teachers. Several families devastated when they saw their children, mothers, sisters and brothers distorted bodies.  Unjust blood was shed and this massacre is continued till to date by the hands of terrorists.

APS Martyrs

The fierce and ruthless killing, mostly children, is a painful memory that echoes down the corridors of time. It has left an irradicable mark on the psyche of the nation. This attack had deep emotional and national impact, as Pakistan witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of anguish and solidarity. That day was perceived as a moment of collective grief and shock that urged the government and other stakeholders to prepare an immediate response to combat this menace.

Pakistan’s government and armed forces joined hands in condemning this brutality and committed to use iron hand against terrorists and extremists.

The APS attack was not just a terrorist attack; it was an attack on the heart of Pakistan’s future, its innocent children, teachers and other staff, the carrier of its hopes and dreams. It deeply trembled the very foundations of the national security and exposed vulnerabilities that highlighted the urgent need for inclusive counterterrorism and security reforms.

National Action Plan

After the attack, there was widespread anxiety and national shock. That shock and anxiety led to the formulation of National Action Plan (NAP) on December 24, 2014. It was a comprehensive strategy to counter terrorism and extremism that marked a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s counterterrorism policy. Therefore, ten years ago, that dreadful brutal attack on APS Peshawar became a turning point in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism and extremism. Operations like Zarb-e-Azb were already underway against the Tehrik- e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) by the Pakistan Armed Forces to combat terrorism in North Waziristan and destroy the militant strongholds. Operation Zarb-e-Azb and other measures like legislative acts and strict security actions reduced the number of large-scale attacks. However, the deeply rooted ideological foundations of extremism are still a challenge, resulting in the resurgence of terrorist attacks and activities. The recent upticks in terrorist activities are also a manifestation of this ongoing phenomenon.

The ongoing efforts of Pakistan to combat terrorism need continued vigilance, unity, and commitment to protect generations from violence and extremism. A haunting memory of APS attack is a reminder that Pakistan’s youth and its future must be shielded from the plague of extremism that endangers their lives, hopes and dreams.
