Chinese Premier Li Qiang was received with great respect and enthusiasm upon his arrival in Islamabad, with Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir leading the welcome at the airport. This symbolic gesture highlighted the military and diplomatic ties between the two countries. The ceremony included a guard of honor and a formal reception hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reflecting the significance of China as a strategic ally.

Key MoUs Signed

During the summit, Pakistan and China signed a total of 13 important accords, signaling cooperation across multiple sectors. These agreements spanned security, education, agriculture, human resource development, science and technology, and information technology. This wide range of sectors demonstrated the comprehensive nature of the bilateral relationship.

Key MoUs included:

Smart Classrooms Project: A collaboration to improve Pakistan’s educational infrastructure with digital technologies.

CPEC Joint Coordination Committee: Documents exchanged highlighted progress in CPEC and Gwadar-related projects.

Human Resource Development and Disaster Management: Agreements to enhance cooperation in disaster management and human resource development, ensuring preparedness for natural calamities.

Co-Production of TV Programs: An agreement to strengthen cultural exchange through media collaboration.

Currency Swap Agreement: A significant financial arrangement between the People’s Bank of China and the State Bank of Pakistan to facilitate smoother trade and economic exchanges.

These agreements represent not just financial and developmental growth but also a shared commitment to a prosperous future.

Gwadar Inauguration: A Gateway to Prosperity

Gwadar port

One of the most significant events of the summit was the inauguration of the New Gwadar International Airport by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Premier Li Qiang. The development of Gwadar under CPEC continues to be a focal point of cooperation between the two nations, positioning it as a hub for international trade and a key player in Pakistan’s economic transformation.

The airport is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating regional connectivity, boosting trade, and fostering tourism. It symbolizes Pakistan’s strategic importance within the SCO and its potential to serve as a vital link in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The Gwadar port and the newly inaugurated airport will enhance the region’s infrastructure and provide employment opportunities, leading to socio-economic development.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation under CPEC Phase-II

The summit also marked the beginning of the second phase of CPEC, where discussions focused on industry relocation, enhancing Chinese investment, and accelerating project completion in Pakistan. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress of CPEC and reiterated their commitment to timely completion of ongoing projects, especially in modernizing agriculture, developing industries, and improving technological infrastructure.

Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of safety for Chinese nationals and ongoing projects, with Pakistan reaffirming its dedication to ensuring a secure environment for Chinese personnel working on CPEC-related initiatives.

Regional and Global Significance of the SCO Summit

The SCO summit not only highlighted the bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and China but also stressed the importance of multilateral diplomacy. Both nations agreed to continue their close consultations on regional and global matters of mutual interest, ensuring strong cooperation at multilateral fora. This collaboration is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the region, particularly in addressing economic challenges and security threats.

A Positive Outlook

The summit demonstrated that Pakistan and China’s relationship is built on a foundation of trust, shared principles, and long-term goals for mutual prosperity. The agreements signed and projects inaugurated reflect a strategic shift towards greater collaboration, paving the way for economic development and regional connectivity. As both nations deepen their ties under CPEC, the benefits are expected to flow not only to Pakistan and China but also to the entire region, contributing to economic stability and growth.

Conclusion

The 2024 SCO summit in Islamabad was a resounding success, with both Pakistan and China reaffirming their commitment to stronger bilateral relations. The inauguration of Gwadar Airport, the signing of multiple MoUs, and the positive discussions on the future of CPEC all point to a prosperous future for the two nations. As Pakistan continues to play a key role within the SCO, its strategic partnership with China will undoubtedly contribute to greater economic, social, and regional stability. The success of this summit underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping a more connected and developed future for both countries and the wider region.
